Discover the south of Tierra del Fuego on a 5-day expedition that combines land journeys, navigation through the Strait of Magellan and the Almirantazgo Sound, camping and walks to glaciers located at the foot of the Darwin Mountain Range. The program includes crossing the Strait of Magellan at its narrowest point, between Punta Delgada and Bahía Azul, to continue south of the Big Island of Tierra del Fuego to the end of the road. From Caleta María we will set sail for Parry Fjord, with visits to the Queen Elizabeth, Darwin, Cuevas and New Zealand glaciers.

Expedition Itinerary

Day 1

From Punta Arenas to Caleta María

The expedition begins with the transfer from Punta Arenas to Caleta María, in Tierra del Fuego.
  • Land journey and crossing to Tierra del Fuego: Departure from Punta Arenas at 07:30 to Germán Genskowsky Camp. Crossing to the Big Island of Tierra del Fuego through Punta Delgada.
  • Arrival at the camp: Reception at the Germán Genskowsky camp and typical welcome dinner.

Day 2

Navigation to Parry Bay and Queen Elizabeth Glacier

Navigation begins from Caleta María to the fjords of Parry Bay.
  • Reception and departure: Departure from the camp at 06:30, with a hot drink and an energy snack. At 07:00, the captain welcomes passengers at the port of Caleta María for a safety briefing. Departure to Parry Bay is scheduled for 08:00 and breakfast for 08:30.
  • Arrival and camp: Arrival at the fjords of Parry Bay at 11:00. At 12:30 the camp is set up and at 14:00 lunch is served.
  • Queen Elizabeth Glacier: At 15:30 the walk to the Queen Elizabeth glacier begins. Arrival at the viewpoint is scheduled for 17:00; return for 18:00; and arrival at the camp for 19:30.
  • Dinner: The day ends with dinner at 20:30.

Day 3

Darwin Glacier and Exploration of Parry Bay

A day of navigation, landing and walks overlooking Parry Fjord and the Darwin Mountain Range.
  • Darwin Glacier: After breakfast at 07:30, departure from the camp is scheduled for 08:00. Arrival at the glacier will be at 09:00 and landing at 09:15.
  • Walk to the viewpoint: At 09:30 the walk towards a viewpoint overlooking Parry Fjord and Darwin Mountain Range begins. Departure from the viewpoint is scheduled for 11:00 and return to the boat for 12:30.
  • Return to Parry Bay: Lunch at 13:00 and departure from Darwin glacier at 14:00. Arrival at Parry Bay is scheduled for 15:30, followed by a landing and a walk to take photographs from 16:00.
  • Return to camp: Departure from Parry Bay at 18:00 and dinner at 20:00.

Day 4

Cuevas and New Zealand Glaciers

The last day of navigation includes breaking camp, a glacial walk and return to Caleta María.
  • Departure from camp: Breakfast at 07:00, breaking camp at 08:00 and departure to Cuevas glacier at 09:00.
  • Cuevas and New Zealand Glaciers: Arrival at Cuevas glacier at 09:30. At 10:00 the walk towards New Zealand glacier begins, with scheduled arrival at 10:45.
  • Return to the boat: Return at 12:00, arrival at the boat at 13:00 and lunch at 13:30.
  • Return to Caleta María: Departure from Cuevas glacier at 15:00 and arrival at Caleta María at 18:00. Overnight at Germán Genskowsky camp, with dinner.

Day 5

Return from Caleta María to Punta Arenas

The expedition ends with the transfer from Caleta María to Punta Arenas.
  • Return journey: Departure from Germán Genskowsky camp at 08:00 and arrival at Cerro Sombrero at 13:00 for lunch. At 15:00 the journey continues to Bahía Azul for the Ferry crossing through the Strait of Magellan and, subsequently, the land journey to Punta Arenas, with scheduled arrival at 19:30. End of the expedition.

Suggested equipment

The Patagonian climate is dynamic and can present all four seasons in a single day. We suggest:
  • “Onion Technique” Clothing (Layers):
  • Base layer: Thermal underwear (top and bottom).
  • Mid layer: Fleece or light down vest to retain heat.
  • Outer layer: 100% waterproof and windproof jacket and pants (Gore-Tex type).
  • Footwear: Waterproof trekking boots or shoes, mid or high cut, with good grip soles and previously broken in.
  • Essential accessories: Wool or fleece hat, wind-resistant gloves, neck gaiter (Buff type) and thick socks (ideally merino wool).
  • Protection and Extras: Sunglasses with UV filter, sunscreen (UV index is high in the region), lip balm, reusable water bottle and camera to capture landscapes and wildlife.
Alternative Activities due to Weather Conditions: If the initially planned excursion cannot be carried out due to weather conditions, it may be replaced by other activities, such as walks, fishing or bird watching. Important Note: Navigations in the Strait of Magellan and Almirantazgo Sound as well as the development of the program are subject to weather conditions. The times indicated correspond to the original program and may require operational adjustments.
